There are 3,819 schools in the US that have Facebook pages. Approximately 93.9% of large schools, those with student populations of 15,000 students or more, have Facebook pages. Approximately 87.9% of medium-sized schools, those with student populations between 15,000 and 5,000 students, have Facebook pages. And 53.1% of small schools, those with student populations of 5,000 students or less, have Facebook pages. The largest schools with Facebook pages are:
  1. University of Phoenix - Online Campus: 291,070 students
  2. Kaplan University - Davenport Campus: 71,011 students
  3. Arizona State University: 68,064 students
And the smallest schools with Facebook pages are:
  1. Carrington College - Online: 1 student
  2. Clinton Technical School: 1 student
  3. Drake College of Business - Newark: 1 student

Page Updates
On average, schools that have Facebook pages update their status 3 times a week. The school that provides the most frequent Facebook updates is California State University - Sacramento, updating its page 44 times a week. The other schools that update their Facebook status most frequently are:
  1. University of South Carolina - Columbia: 38 times a week
  2. Central Piedmont Community College: 36 times a week
  3. University of Nebraska at Omaha: 35 times a week
Large schools tend to update their Facebook status, on average, 6 times a week. Medium-sized schools tend to update their Facebook status an average of 4 times a week. And small schools, on average, update their Facebook status 3 times a week.

Facebook "Likes"
School pages around the nation have an average of 4,973 "likes" on Facebook. The school with the most Facebook "likes" is Harvard University, with 711,688 "likes." Other schools with a significant number of "likes", include:
  1. Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College: 466,301 "likes"
  2. Ohio State University - Main Campus: 382,198 "likes"
  3. University of Michigan - Ann Arbor: 359,331 "likes"
Large schools have an average of 32,786 "likes" on their Facebook pages. Medium-sized schools have 5,216 "likes", on average, on their Facebook pages. And small schools have an average of 1,680 Facebook "likes."

Overall Social Presence
Of the schools that have Facebook pages, 48% also have both a Twitter account and a YouTube channel. On average, schools with a presence on all three major social media outlets update their Facebook status 4 times a week, send 83 tweets a week and have 7 YouTube videos posted on their channels. And these schools have an average of 8,245 Facebook "likes", 282 Twitter followers and 1,358 YouTube channel subscribers.
Approximately 8.3% of schools with Facebook pages have a Twitter account, but no YouTube channel. These schools tend to update their Facebook status 3 times a week and send 52 tweets a week, on average. They also have an average of 1,943 Facebook "likes" and 98 Twitter followers.
On the other hand, approximately 20.9% of schools with Facebook pages have a YouTube channel, but no Twitter account. These schools tend to update their Facebook status 3 times a week and have 4 videos posted on their channels, on average. They also have an average of 2,997 Facebook "likes" and 570 YouTube subscribers.
The remaining 22.9% of schools with Facebook pages have no other social media presence.
Of the 324 large schools with Facebook, 72.5% have Twitter and YouTube accounts, 5.9% have only a Twitter account, 15.7% have only a YouTube channel and 5.9% have neither a Twitter account, nor a YouTube channel. Of the 675 medium-sized schools with Facebook, 64.4% have Twitter and YouTube accounts, 7.3% have only a Twitter account, 19.4% have only a YouTube channel and 8.9% have neither a Twitter account, nor a YouTube channel. Of the 2,786 small schools with Facebook, 41.1% have Twitter and YouTube accounts, 8.8% have only a Twitter account, 21.8% have only a YouTube channel and 28.3% have neither a Twitter account, nor a YouTube channel.
