Information and Requirements for Free Child Development Courses or Learning Materials

These free online child development courses are offered by Utah State University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Notre Dame. The OCW project involves many universities around the world and makes prior courses available to the general public. Many OCW courses use a combination of lectures, slides and interactive materials. However, some courses include material that may be difficult for a single OCW learner to complete, such as class discussions and group projects.

List of Free Online Child Development Courses

Infant and Early Childhood Cognition at MIT

This course explores how children develop a cognitive understanding of objects and individuals. Lecture notes cover topics such as the theory of word learning, object concepts and imaginative play. Assignment instructions for critical response papers and a final research paper are included.

Introduction to Social Psychology at the University of Notre Dame

This course charts how the development of personality from birth through adulthood is shaped by groups we belong to, people we know, our interactions and the social structures that surround us. OCW users can find a list of optional reading assignments on the calendar and readings page. Lecture notes are available that contain optional learning activities.

Power of Positive Parenting at Utah State University

The purpose of this course is to give parents and prospective parents the tools needed to raise children in a positive environment. The course was developed closely with Glen Latham, an author who has written numerous books on parenting techniques. There are 27 text-based lessons available that cover topics like behavioral development, dealing with adolescents and building self-esteem during childhood.

Earn Real Credit from Free Courses

While the free courses above don't award credit directly, you can earn credit by passing an exam and transferring credit to your college. There are two widely recognized and affordable options for exams that award credit.

Option #1: CLEP Exams

The College Board's 33 CLEP exams allow you to test out of your general education requirements. Credit is accepted at 2/3 of colleges and universities in the U.S.

Option #2: Excelsior College's Credit-by-Exam

Excelsior College offers over 40 exams that lead to transferable credit. You can also earn three full degrees by taking free online courses and earning your credit by exam.

New ECED course: Sociocultural Perspectives in ECE

ECED 480B will investigate the breadth of research on early learning within a sociocultural theoretical framework. Students will reflect on the importance of different types of relationships and contexts (i.e., home, school, community) for young children and examine the ways a range of mediators impact children's worlds. This online course will be taught by Dr. Jodi Streelasky between Sep-Dec 2012.

Visiting ECE scholar from New Zealand, Dr. Judith Duncan, will lead a one day seminar on the important topic of the rights of young children, on November 3, 2012.
